I have a daughter in college, who exhibits a behavior I don't quite understand.

My younger brother, my sons, and my nephews will all soon have callused thumbs from playing video games and sending text messages.

I have witnessed 5-year-olds tell their parents, "No!"

And that's just the beginning of the language issues of the day. If you can decipher the mumbled partially annunciated gibberish being used right now, you will notice (more than anything else) that younger black people use the N-word more today than the actual Klan members I grew up with down in Florida.

The fact that I am bemused by all of this, I was recently told, is because I'm Old School. The values I hold are outdated, they say. My mindset will encourage successful navigation of mainstream society, sure, but it won't prod me to cover myself in enough tattoo ink to guarantee that some really good opportunities will no longer be available to me. It won't induce me to eat vegan, not exercise, smoke marijuana, and be gluten-free, all at the same time.

I won't dismiss the Creator and bow down to Starbucks. I'm Old School.

I am happy to embrace new technology, (some) new music, new art. I like the fact that Uber will take me everywhere I need to go. I have an iPhone, MacBook, and Apple Watch. But I have a classic Swiss timepiece, as well. I own a properly fitted dark-colored suit. My clothes are ironed before I put them on. Geez, Louise.

So it's not Old School v New School. (Well, because we all know who would win that one.)

It's just preference.

I'm Old School and Proud Of It.
